When an Old Board Stops Keeping Up

If your property still relies on ceramic fuses, the switchboard feels unusually warm, or circuit breakers trip whenever multiple appliances are used at the same time, it may be a sign that your switchboard is no longer meeting the demands of modern electrical usage.

Justin Purdey Electrical provides professional switchboard upgrades throughout the Clarence Valley for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. Upgrading your switchboard improves both safety and performance by replacing outdated fuse systems with modern circuit breakers and installing RCD safety switches to help protect against electric shock and electrical faults.

A modern switchboard also provides additional capacity for future electrical requirements, whether you're installing a new air conditioner, upgrading appliances, adding workshop equipment, or preparing for EV charging. In many cases, an upgraded switchboard allows the rest of your electrical system to operate more efficiently and reliably.

Switchboard upgrades are often identified as a necessary part of renovation and extension projects, helping ensure the electrical infrastructure can safely support increased demand.

Common Questions

  • Ceramic fuses, no safety switches and breakers that trip under normal household load all point to a board at its limit, as do scorch marks or a burning smell around the board itself. A board with no spare space for new circuits is a practical limit too, even when nothing has failed.

  • A circuit breaker protects the wiring, cutting power when a circuit draws more current than it's rated for. A safety switch, or RCD, protects people by detecting current leaking to earth and cutting power far faster than a breaker would.

  • Often, because both add a dedicated circuit and many older boards have no spare space or an insufficient main switch rating. It's worth having an electrician assess the board's capacity before you order the equipment.
